Review of the Scribbles That Matter Notebook for Bullet Journaling (Pros, Cons and a Video Walkthrough)

After all the hype about the Scribbles That Matter notebook for bullet journaling, I decided I had to get a copy to see what all the fuss was about!

When the planner arrived I first thought, I don’t understand. But then I opened the notebook and felt the paper and it all made sense!

Quick facts

  • Size: 5.5″ wide x 8.25″ high
  • Book / sewn binding
  • This belongs to page in case your planner is lost
  • Numbered pages
  • 201 grid dot pages
  • Key
  • 3 Index Pages

Price: $20 USD

Let’s take a closer look!

To clarify from the video, the notebook is expensive if you live in Australia as it’s currently only available on Amazon + international shipping to get it to Australia makes it a very expensive little notebook!

The Cover

The cover is that material that’s a cross between a hardcover but it’s still soft (sorry, hard to describe!)

The cover has the cute doodles in the cover (i.e. 3D)

I’m not a fan of the teal and yellow color combination (or anything with yellow), however there are other cover styles available.

And it’s big enough to fit the Frixion pen!

Numbered Pages

An essential for any bullet journal notebook – the pages are already numbered

Pocket Folder

Pen Testing

I tried various ballpoint, gel, fine tip and marker tip pens, plus highlighters and stamps. The paper felt super smooth to write on, however there was ghosting on the back side of the page – especially from the marker pens.

The Frixion stamps and highlighters weren’t too bad but the MAMBI stamps (which are ideal for list making) bled through the page (as always) ?

Pros of the Planner

  • Portable size
  • Lightweight
  • Cute cover design
  • 2 built in ribbon page markers
  • Pen loop
  • Index pages
  • Bullet key and color code pages
  • Pocket folder
  • Multiple cover colors to choose from

Cons of the Planner

  • The pages near the stitching seams lay flat but the ones between not so much. There’s already a hint that the stitching is going to come undone over time
  • No option to personalise the cover

Would I use this notebook?

The cover design is cute and this notebook ticks all the requirements for a bullet journal (key page, index, numbered pages, pen loop etc.), however, pens had bad ghosting and some bled through.

If you live in Australia like I do, it’s a bit too pricey in my opinion.

If you like this notebook, it’s available on Amazon (affiliate link)

I did see that shop but ended up buying quite a few other planners from Amazon at the same time… to make the international shipping costs worthwhile 😉

I have to agree with your opinion about the paper…. this is my first bullet journal and I cannot figure out how people do all this decorative stuff! Every time I try something colorful, the ghosting/bleed through is terrible. I also think there is a coating on the paper that goes away when you wet it… every time I try the tomboy blender brush for a watercolor effect, the paper texture changes and almost seems like it’s going to dissolve- it makes little balls on the surface. I’m going to stick with super minimalist from now on til I finish this journal. ??. Which journal can you actually use colored markers? I have crayon super tips and a few Tom bows …
