Planner Review: Rule the World by Sugar and Type (Pros, Cons and a video walkthrough!)

While on the hunt for weekly planners that offer a little something extra, I came across the Rule the World Planner by Sugar and Type!

I was not compensated for this review. I purchased the planner myself and all opinions are my own.

Rule the World Planner

  • Size: approx 6.5″ wide x 8.75″ high (pages are 5.5 x 8.5″ high or half US letter page size)
  • Sturdy front and back covers
  • Gold details on the corners of the cover
  • Gold wire binding
  • Monthly tabs
  • 2 page weekly spread (starts on Monday)
  • 2 page monthly calendar (starts on Sunday)
  • Monthly planning
  • Divider tabs for each onth
  • Minimalist style – black & white
  • Plenty of extra pages

Let’s take a closer look!

To enlarge the screen of the video, click the square icon in the bottom right hand corner of the video (it will say ‘full screen’ when you hover your mouse over the icon).

The Cover

The cover has the sturdiness of a hardcover but feels like soft velvet

Gold details on the corners <3

The planner has a small page size but is quite bulky (approx 1 inch thick) due to the numerous extra pages most planners don’t include

Monthly Calendar

Week starts on a Sunday

The left page of each monthly calendar is also the tab / divider for that month (i.e. the left page is cardstock but the right calendar page is paper).

Dates at a glance calendars for the previous and next month. The sidebar is quite narrow.

USA holidays are pre-printed.

Unfortunately the calendar does my pet hate where the calendar boxes are split into 2 at the end of the month rather than re-starting the numbering on the top row.

Monthly divider and monthly goals

I really like the simplicity of this page – particularly the checkboxes!

Monthly budget & spending log

One for each month – pages that most planners don’t include!

Weekly Planner

The weekly spread is the main reason I wanted this planner. I really like having the week on one side and list making & notes section on the other page.

rule the world 2 page weekly planner spread sugar and type monday week start affordable minimalist black and gold

The layout of this planner is in sync with how I plan with priorities then space to list other to dos.

I do wish that Saturday and Sunday weren’t combined and had the same amount of space as the weekdays.

Dates at a glance

Week starts Sunday which matches the monthly calendars but not the weekly spread.

Extras pages

Brain Dump

How cute is this bee themed divider?!

Habit trackers

I love habit trackers – they save space and avoid having to re-write recurring tasks. Oddly there’s only 2 of these pages. 12 would be ideal.

Note & Sketching Pages

Grocery list & Daily Planning

There are 5 of these pages. The daily planning pages are printed on the back so not ideal if you want to tear the page out and take it with you to the grocery shop.

It’s a nice extra to have daily planning pages but only 5 of them doesn’t seem enough.

Account / Password Tracker

I wish the ‘plans to rule the world’ page had a structured layout rather than just lined note paper. Planners never seem to have enough structured goal setting pages.

Networking / contacts

Tabs

The monthly tabs are thin cardstock with a bit of laminate for durability.

Each month has a different divider:

Pocket Folder

Double sided.

Pen Testing

I tried various balllpoint, gel, fine tip and marker tip pens – there was some ghosting on the back side of the page. I also did some highlighter and stamp swatches. The highlighters also had some ghosting and, as always, the MAMBI stamps bled through the page ?

Pros of the Rule the World Planner

  • Portable size
  • Minimalist color scheme
  • Hardcover
  • Plenty of extras pages that most planners don’t include such as password log, habit tracker
  • Pocket folder
  • Functional monthly planning pages
  • Lots of list making space

Cons of the Rule the World Planner

  • The monthly calendar splits the boxes rather than re-starting numbering on the top row
  • Not enough of the extra pages – the habit trackers, password log, day to a page planners and grocery list
  • The grocery list has the daily planner printed on the back which is not ideal if you want to tear it out

Would I use this planner?

Yes, the weekly layout is my favorite style – days of the week on the left and list making / note taking space on the right.
