Power Planner Review (and Comparison with the Passion Planner)

For anyone searching for a planner in half hourly timeslots and an extended PM schedule, the Power Planner’s weekly spread (for each day) runs from 6am through to 2am.

It’s style is very similar to the Passion Planner (I’ve done a comparison of the two at the end of this post).

Quick facts

  • Size: 5.75″ wide x 8.25″ high
  • Softcover
  • Sewn binding
  • Undated
  • 12 month duration
  • 2 page Monthly calendar (starts on Sunday)
  • 2 page weekly spread (starts on Sunday)
  • 2 page monthly review
  • 6 Double sided lined notes pages
  • Travel bucket list – maps & places to visit list for each continent
  • 3 Ribbon bookmarks
  • Neutral inside pages
  • Pocket folder
  • Comes with a pen (and pen loop built into the cover)
  • 120 GSM paper (bright white) – 100% recycled paper

Originally launched via a Kickstarter campaign in 2018, I found this planner on Amazon last year. When I went to find it to add the link to the post I couldn’t, so perhaps they’ve stopped making the planner or are in between print runs.

Let’s take a closer look!

To enlarge the screen of the video, click the square icon in the bottom right hand corner of the video (it will say ‘full screen’ when you hover your mouse over the icon).

Here’s the link to the Sunshine Sticker Co washi tape mentioned in the video.

The Cover

The usual flexible softcover in faux leather material. Black was the only color option when I purchased, although their Kickstarter campaign offered a brown version as well.

At the front is a short goals section with some questions to prompt what you want your life to look like to decide on your goals.

And then the monthly calendar starts. I think the goals section is too brief. Some lined pages or structured pages for each of your goals would be good.

Monthly Calendar

Starts Sunday (consistent with the weekly spread).

You can add the dates in the circles (6mm diameter) or cover them up with a date dot sticker.

The line spacing in the notes sidebar is 4.5mm.

The monthly calendar has a good layout – no wasted space, narrow margin – very functional.

Each box is just over 1.25″ wide x 1.25″ high.

The planner is set up with 2 page monthly calendar followed by the weekly spreads, monthly review and then the calendar for the next month.

Weekly Planning

There are 5 weekly spreads for each month.

The weekly spread starts on Sunday (consistent with the monthly calendar).

The line spacing in the sidebar is 4mm and 5mm on the daily checklists.

Monthly Review

There are 8 questions:

  1. What goals did you reach this month?
  2. What was stopping me from reaching certain goals?
  3. What did I learn this month?
  4. What is my favorite memory from this month?
  5. What new places did I visit this month?
  6. What am I grateful for this month?
  7. How can I improve next month?
  8. What goals will I focus on next month?

Extras pages

As someone that’s very keen on travel I love these maps at the back of the planner. Broken down into countries for each continent and by state for the USA. You could color code the places you want to go to map out future trips! (at the moment I do this digitally in Goodnotes, only because I never found a planner that had detailed maps like this one does)

There are 6 double sided lined notes pages at the back of the planner (5mm line spacing).

I didn’t do a pen test of this planner as I won’t be keeping it. I didn’t see any show through of the ink printing on the back side of pages.

Pros of the Planner

  • Affordable
  • Portable page size
  • Minimalist color scheme – add as much color with highlighters, pens etc.
  • Pocket folder
  • Comes with page flags
  • 2 page monthly review
  • Built in pen loop
  • Functional page layouts with no wasted space
  • All pages are numbered
  • Undated – start using anytime
  • Bright white paper
  • Pages lay mostly flat on their own
  • 3 Ribbon bookmarks
  • For every planner sold the company plants one tree
  • Vertical hourly in 30 minute timeslots instead of hourly like most vertical planners

Cons of the Planner

  • No tabs
  • Small line spacing
  • Black and brown are the only cover colors available
  • Not enough goal planning pages

Would I use this planner?

No. I don’t use vertical planners or any planner with timeslots. I prefer to work off a to do list rather than a structured daily layout. I think this planner would be better if it was a slightly bigger page size e.g. 7″ wide x 9″ high as the line spacing on the weekly spread is very small.

Power Planner versus the Passion Planner

The Power Planner is very similar to the Passion Planner – here’s a quick comparison.

See this post for my review of the Passion Planner.

passion planner alternative power planner a5 pros and cons paper quality vertical hourly 2 page weekly which is better

Both planners are the same width (5.75″ wide, height (8.25″) and thickness 1.25″

passion planner alternative power planner a5 pros and cons paper quality vertical hourly 2 page weekly

Both planners have

  • Page size 5.75″ wide x 8.25″ high (note: Passion Planner also comes in 8.5″ wide x 11″ high letter size)
  • Similar style – fonts, colors, gender neutral color scheme
  • Vertical half hourly schedule 2 page weekly planner format
  • Pocket Folder
  • Line spacing is 3mm
  • Goal pages at the front of the planner
  • Sunday start on the monthly calendar and weekly planner
  • 2 page monthly reflection questions

power planner weekly vertical half hourly comparison with the passion planner a5 page size minimalist gender neutral sunday week start video flipthrough

Differences

  • The Power Planner has travel maps, lined pages and blank pages at the back
  • Passion Planner’s schedule on the weekly spread runs from 6am to 10:30pm, Power Planner’s schedule runs from 6am to 2am
  • Passion Planner has a weekly overview list, rather than individual lists for each day like the Power Planner has
  • Passion Planner comes in a blue or black cover version, Power Planner only comes in black and brown
  • Passion planner has graph paper at the back of the planner, Power Planner has lined and unlined pages

Which is better?

Both are very similar. I prefer the Passion Planner as the timed section has hours I think more people are likely to use (I doubt many people would need a schedule that runs until 2am). Because of the shorter schedule there is more list space on the weekly spread and it’s not allocated to individual days.
